The Health Paradox: Why the Richest Nation Isnโt the Healthies - No Membership Required
Why does a teenage girl in Sri Lanka have a better chance of reaching age 60 than her American counterpart, despite America spending more on healthcare than any other nation?
Join the Healthcare Reinvention Collaborative for a compelling conversation with Dr. Stephen Bezruchka, physician, public health expert, and author, as he reveals the shocking truth behind Americaโs health crisis. Although the U.S. accounts for nearly half the worldโs healthcare spending, we rank behind more than 40 other countries in life expectancy.
Dr. Bezruchka draws from his extraordinary career โ from Harvard mathematician to emergency physician in Seattle to community health pioneer in Nepal โ to challenge our fundamental assumptions about what truly creates health.
Discover why:
The first 1,000 days after conception shape half your adult health outcomes
How economic inequality becomes biologically embedded
Why medical care can only prevent about 10% of premature deaths
This provocative talk will challenge your assumptions, spark new ideas, and shift the conversation from โmore careโ to โwhat truly makes us healthy.โ Whether you work in healthcare, policy, or simply care about the future of our communities, this is a conversation you wonโt want to miss.
Come curious. Leave transformed.
Guest Bio:
Stephen Bezruchka is a senior lecturer in the Department of Health Systems and Population Health and the Department of Global Health. He worked in clinical medicine for 35 years, including more than a decade in Nepal, where he set up a hospital for training generalist doctors and worked to improve surgical services. Dr. Bezruchka founded the Population Health Forum to promote dialogue about how political, economic, and social inequalities interact to affect the overall health status of society. He despairs the relative and absolute health decline in the United States, despite this nation spending more on health care than the rest of the world combined. Dr. Bezruchka was awarded the School of Public Healthโs Outstanding Teaching Award in 2002, the Faculty Community Service Award in 2008, and the Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award in 2017. He is on the Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility board of directors. Dr. Bezruchka earned an MPH from Johns Hopkins University and an M.D. from Stanford University. Dr. Bezruchkaโs most recent book, โInequality Kills Us Allโ examines how economic and social inequality leads to poorer health and higher mortality, and how living in a society with entrenched hierarchies increases the adverse effects of illnesses for everyone.

Positive Deviant Detectives: Money Remaking Medicine - No Membership Required
Our time together is 90 minutes. The first hour is designated for the event and the remaining 30 minutes are for Networking Conversations. You can join us for the event, networking, or both. Your choice!
Event Description:
What if the key to fixing healthcare isnโt about spending more, but spending smarter?
In the book Switch, researchers uncovered a surprising truth: in a Vietnamese village facing widespread child malnutrition, a few mothers had quietly figured out how to keep their children healthy. These outliersโpositive deviantsโoffered simple, replicable practices that saved lives.
That same search for hidden solutions is exactly what Emily Peters is doing in healthcare economics!
Join us as Emily workshops her upcoming book, "Money Remaking Medicine," in a live conversation with Matthew Holt, self-proclaimed โHealthcare Curmudgeonโ, and our HRC community.
The plot twist: What if America's massive healthcare budget could actually become part of the solution? We're not short on moneyโweโre short on models that use it well.
We're tracking down the bright spots:
๐ธPayment models that reward what actually matters
๐ธThe "fair process" that gets physician investment in decisions
๐ธTax tweaks and corporate structures that flip incentives
๐ธCommunities using capitalism as a tool for health equity
๐ธThose rare moments when costs dropped AND outcomes improved
Emily's mission: "Tell me something I don't know."
While the headlines scream about burnout and broken incentives, we're finding places where the money already flows toward primary care, prevention, and better patient outcomes.
The opportunity: Americans love a deal AND we love innovation. Someone's figured out how to deliver both in healthcareโwe just need to find them, study them, and scale what works.
Think your community is doing something that works?
Come be part of the positive deviant detective team with us! Letโs find whatโs working and figure out how to spread it.
What are Networking Conversations?
Participants are sent into break-out rooms of two to three, randomly selected by Zoom.
Seven minutes allow for brief introductions. It is up to you to exchange contact information and follow up if you wish for a more extended conversation.

This continues until our time is up.

Join us For The Great Scale Debate
Is healthcare reform best achieved through unified national systems that standardize care and distribute resources equitably? Or do we need a mosaic of local innovations adapted to community needs and circumstances?
Our panel will debate the proposition that "America's Healthcare Future Lies in National Systems, Not Local Solutions" in a lively Intelligence Squared-style format where audience votes determine the winning argument.
Distinguished Panelists:
Emily Peters - Healthcare entrepreneur, author, and patient advocate whose near-death experience during childbirth transformed her understanding of healthcare's broken systems.
Michael Millenson - Award-nominated journalist, healthcare quality pioneer, and author of the groundbreaking "Demanding Medical Excellence."
Jeff Goldsmith - Renowned healthcare futurist with 50 years of experience, writing "A User's Guide to the Medical Industrial Complex."

Opening statements presenting both sides of the debate
Structured cross-examination between panelists
Audience polling at beginning and end to determine which argument changed more minds
Interactive Q&A where you can challenge the panelists

If successful social care networks in San Diego can be replicated elsewhere
The fundamental tension between standardization and adaptation in healthcare delivery
Registration:
This virtual event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Capacity is limited to ensure meaningful interaction.
Reserve your spot today to join the debate that will shape healthcare's future!

Compassion in Healthcare: From Clinical Practice to Global Health
Join us for an insightful conversation on the power of compassion in transforming healthcare at every level โ from individual patient care to global health initiatives.
Our time together is 90 minutes. The first hour is designated for the panel of experts, and the remaining 30 minutes are for Networking Conversations. You can join us for the event, networking, or both. Your choice!
Event Description:
How can compassion reshape healthcare โ improving patient outcomes, reducing provider burnout, and addressing global health inequities?
Meet Our Expert Panelists:
Pantea Vahidi: A leader in compassion education, blending her background in engineering and nursing to reimagine how we care for patients and providers.
Melissa Segal: A specialist in healthcare culture transformation, working to create environments where both patients and caregivers can thrive.
Heather Buesseler: A pioneer at the intersection of human-centered design and compassion cultivation in health systems around the world.
What to Expect:
Real-World Insights: Learn how compassionate approaches can address challenges across healthcare, from provider burnout to global health disparities.
Practical Strategies: Gain actionable tools for embedding compassion into your actions and work, whether youโre a provider, leader, or advocate.
Connection & Collaboration: Engage in dynamic conversations with fellow changemakers and stay for an optional 30-minute networking session to deepen relationships and explore opportunities for impact.
Why This Matter:
Healthcare is at a tipping pointโburnout is rising, health disparities are widening, and patients often feel like numbers rather than people. Compassion isnโt just kindness; itโs a proven strategy for improving patient outcomes, reducing provider stress, and strengthening healthcare systems. Yet, it remains undervalued in clinical and policy decisions. This conversation goes beyond theory to explore actionable, evidence-based ways to embed compassion into healthcare, creating lasting change for individuals, organizations, and global health systems alike.
Through evidence and real-world examples, we'll examine how cultivating compassion can create ripple effects that benefit individuals, organizations, and communities worldwide.
Compassion isnโt just a feelingโitโs a powerful force for systemic change. Register now to join the conversation and be part of the movement toward a more compassionate, equitable healthcare system.
