Can We Do This Better? A Conversation About Primary Care and Beyond
Our time together is 90 minutes. The first hour is designated for the event, and the remaining 30 minutes are for Networking Conversations. You can join us for the event, networking, or both. Your choice!
Our Guest Panelists: Kathleen Bartholomew, Victor Guajardo, and Sara Pastoor
Event Description
What will it take to build a system that truly supports health for everyone?
Our current healthcare system struggles to deliver even the basics of primary care, especially in rural, underserved, and marginalized communities. But the challenge runs deeper than access alone. To create real health, we must ask bigger questions:
🔸How do we design a system that creates health rather than reacts to illness?
🔸What workforce, payment structures, technologies, and connections are required?
🔸How do we integrate primary care with specialty care, behavioral health, public health, and social supports?
🔸And critically, how do we ensure this system reaches and serves everyone?
Join us for a collaborative conversation that moves beyond fixing what’s broken. This isn’t about tweaking primary care or longing for how things used to be. It’s about reimagining how we structure, fund, and deliver care to support health and equity at scale for today’s realities and the future we want to create.
This one-hour session is not just a panel; it’s a dialogue. We’ll hear from innovators and thought leaders pushing boundaries and advocating for system-level transformation. More importantly, we’ll hear from you and others joining the event.
Key themes we seek to explore (time permitting!):
🔸The system-level factors that shape what care is possible
🔸Interdisciplinary approaches to healing and health
🔸Promising efforts already in motion (e.g., Direct Primary Care, PC4AA, and others)
🔸What it might take to shift from reactive sick care to proactive health creation
🔸How each of us can support or spark meaningful change
Why Attend?
🔸Learn from bold efforts already transforming care
🔸Contribute your insights into an engaging, co-created conversation
🔸Connect with others, asking the same hard questions about health and systems
🔸Stay for our post-event Networking Conversations to deepen relationships with fellow Ruckus Makers
Who Should Attend?
🔸Anyone working in or impacted by healthcare, which means all of us
🔸Especially those in care delivery, systems design, policy, community health, funding, and innovation
Whether you’re a healthcare professional, policymaker, innovator, patient advocate, or someone passionate about the future of care, your voice belongs in this conversation.
This is your invitation to shift from fragmented reform to collective reinvention.
Let’s talk about what’s happening now, what’s needed next, and how we move forward—TOGETHER.
What are Networking Conversations?
🔸Participants are sent into break-out rooms of two to three, randomly selected by Zoom.
🔸Seven minutes allow for brief introductions. It is up to you to exchange contact information and follow up if you wish for a more extended conversation.
🔸The group returns and is quickly sent into break-out rooms again.

Connecting the Dots: From Healthcare Challenges to Societal Solutions Session 1 (of 3)
Session 1 (of 3): Getting Grounded in Collaborative Problem Solving
What's this series about?
This interactive three-part workshop series is designed to explore the deep connections between healthcare challenges and broader societal issues—something many in our community have been considering. It began with a poll asking, "To what extent do you believe the challenges in healthcare are connected to broader societal issues?"
HRC member Brent Renkema responded, "Your question is a great thought prompter for an ideation/design thinking session." That's precisely what we're doing: using creative problem-solving methods to reframe challenges, surface root causes, and identify meaningful opportunities for change.
Why attend
Looking for new ways to approach old problems in healthcare? This session introduces foundational tools in design thinking and collaborative problem solving and gives you a chance to try them in a supportive, hands-on setting.
Who should attend
Anyone committed to creating a lasting impact in healthcare, especially those ready to challenge assumptions, explore patterns, and reframe problems from the inside out.
What to expect
🔸A supportive introduction to Miro (our shared digital whiteboard)
🔸A primer on collaborative design and systems thinking
🔸Tools to help you reframe problems and reveal new possibilities
Join us to set the stage for systems-level insight and collective action.
Can't attend all three? No problem, each session stands on its own. Recordings and summaries will be shared with attendees and registrants of future sessions. You're welcome to jump in at any point (though joining all is highly recommended).
Special thanks to HRC member Brent Renkema for stepping forward to co-lead this work! Brent brings deep experience in design thinking, lean manufacturing, and creative collaboration. He's passionate about using iterative problem-solving to address complex healthcare challenges, and we're thrilled to learn from him.

Connecting the Dots: From Healthcare Challenges to Societal Solutions Session 2 (of 3)
Session 2 (of 3): Exploring the Challenge Beneath the Challenge
What's this series about?
Sparked by a community poll and brought to life by HRC member Brent Renkema, this three-part series provides an opportunity to explore the big idea: How are healthcare's most challenging problems connected to broader social systems?
And what happens when we stop treating symptoms and start addressing root causes?
Why attend
In this second session, we'll delve beneath the surface of healthcare's visible problems and explore what's truly driving them. You'll practice new methods for uncovering root causes and begin to see where change might truly start.
Who should attend
Anyone committed to creating a lasting impact in healthcare, especially those ready to challenge assumptions, explore patterns, and reframe problems from the inside out.
What to expect
Interactive group work to explore hidden dynamics
Tools to identify leverage points for meaningful change
Creative frameworks that push past traditional thinking
Missed Session 1? No worries, we'll share the recording and summary so you can catch up. Each session adds value on its own, though we recommend attending the whole series if you can

Positive Deviant Detectives: Money Remaking Medicine - No Membership Required
Our time together is 90 minutes. The first hour is designated for the event and the remaining 30 minutes are for Networking Conversations. You can join us for the event, networking, or both. Your choice!
Event Description:
What if the key to fixing healthcare isn’t about spending more (or less), but spending smarter?
In the book Switch, researchers uncovered a surprising truth: in a Vietnamese village facing widespread child malnutrition, a few mothers had quietly figured out how to keep their children healthy. These outliers—positive deviants—offered simple, replicable practices that saved lives.
That same search for hidden solutions is exactly what Emily Peters is doing on the topic of healthcare economics!
Join us as Emily workshops her upcoming book, "Money Remaking Medicine," in a live conversation with Matthew Holt, self-proclaimed ‘Healthcare Curmudgeon’, and our HRC community.
The plot twist: What if America's massive healthcare budget could actually become part of the solution? We're not short on money—we’re short on models that use it well and support real patient affordability.
We're tracking down the bright spots:
🔸Payment models that reward what actually matters
🔸The "fair process" that gets physician investment in decisions
🔸Tax tweaks and corporate structures that flip incentives
🔸Communities using capital as a tool for health equity
🔸Those rare moments when costs dropped AND outcomes improved
Emily's mission: "Tell me something I don't know."
While the headlines scream about burnout and broken incentives, we're finding places where the money already flows toward primary care, prevention, and better patient outcomes.
The opportunity: Americans love a deal AND we love innovation. Someone is figuring out how to deliver both in healthcare—we need to find them, study them, and scale what works.
Think your community is doing something that works?
Come be part of the positive deviant detective team with us! Let’s find what’s working and figure out how to spread it.

The Health Paradox: Why the Richest Nation Isn’t the Healthies - No Membership Required
Why does a teenage girl in Sri Lanka have a better chance of reaching age 60 than her American counterpart, despite America spending more on healthcare than any other nation?
Join the Healthcare Reinvention Collaborative for a compelling conversation with Dr. Stephen Bezruchka, physician, public health expert, and author, as he reveals the shocking truth behind America’s health crisis. Although the U.S. accounts for nearly half the world’s healthcare spending, we rank behind more than 40 other countries in life expectancy.
Dr. Bezruchka draws from his extraordinary career – from Harvard mathematician to emergency physician in Seattle to community health pioneer in Nepal – to challenge our fundamental assumptions about what truly creates health.
Discover why:
The first 1,000 days after conception shape half your adult health outcomes
How economic inequality becomes biologically embedded
Why medical care can only prevent about 10% of premature deaths
This provocative talk will challenge your assumptions, spark new ideas, and shift the conversation from “more care” to “what truly makes us healthy.” Whether you work in healthcare, policy, or simply care about the future of our communities, this is a conversation you won’t want to miss.
Come curious. Leave transformed.
Guest Bio:
Stephen Bezruchka is a senior lecturer in the Department of Health Systems and Population Health and the Department of Global Health. He worked in clinical medicine for 35 years, including more than a decade in Nepal, where he set up a hospital for training generalist doctors and worked to improve surgical services. Dr. Bezruchka founded the Population Health Forum to promote dialogue about how political, economic, and social inequalities interact to affect the overall health status of society. He despairs the relative and absolute health decline in the United States, despite this nation spending more on health care than the rest of the world combined. Dr. Bezruchka was awarded the School of Public Health’s Outstanding Teaching Award in 2002, the Faculty Community Service Award in 2008, and the Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award in 2017. He is on the Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility board of directors. Dr. Bezruchka earned an MPH from Johns Hopkins University and an M.D. from Stanford University. Dr. Bezruchka’s most recent book, “Inequality Kills Us All” examines how economic and social inequality leads to poorer health and higher mortality, and how living in a society with entrenched hierarchies increases the adverse effects of illnesses for everyone.

Compassion in Healthcare: From Clinical Practice to Global Health
Join us for an insightful conversation on the power of compassion in transforming healthcare at every level – from individual patient care to global health initiatives.
Our time together is 90 minutes. The first hour is designated for the panel of experts, and the remaining 30 minutes are for Networking Conversations. You can join us for the event, networking, or both. Your choice!
Event Description:
How can compassion reshape healthcare – improving patient outcomes, reducing provider burnout, and addressing global health inequities?
Meet Our Expert Panelists:
Pantea Vahidi: A leader in compassion education, blending her background in engineering and nursing to reimagine how we care for patients and providers.
Melissa Segal: A specialist in healthcare culture transformation, working to create environments where both patients and caregivers can thrive.
Heather Buesseler: A pioneer at the intersection of human-centered design and compassion cultivation in health systems around the world.
What to Expect:
Real-World Insights: Learn how compassionate approaches can address challenges across healthcare, from provider burnout to global health disparities.
Practical Strategies: Gain actionable tools for embedding compassion into your actions and work, whether you’re a provider, leader, or advocate.
Connection & Collaboration: Engage in dynamic conversations with fellow changemakers and stay for an optional 30-minute networking session to deepen relationships and explore opportunities for impact.
Why This Matter:
Healthcare is at a tipping point—burnout is rising, health disparities are widening, and patients often feel like numbers rather than people. Compassion isn’t just kindness; it’s a proven strategy for improving patient outcomes, reducing provider stress, and strengthening healthcare systems. Yet, it remains undervalued in clinical and policy decisions. This conversation goes beyond theory to explore actionable, evidence-based ways to embed compassion into healthcare, creating lasting change for individuals, organizations, and global health systems alike.
Through evidence and real-world examples, we'll examine how cultivating compassion can create ripple effects that benefit individuals, organizations, and communities worldwide.
Compassion isn’t just a feeling—it’s a powerful force for systemic change. Register now to join the conversation and be part of the movement toward a more compassionate, equitable healthcare system.
